Banks : NPLs decrease on the left, but increase on the right

First the good news : “The BoT Financial Institutions Policy Department reported NPLs [non performing loans] in the banking system amounted to Bt237.89 billion or 3.95 per cent of the total loans in the fourth quarter of last year, down Bt22.83 billion or 8.75 per cent from Bt260.72 billion or 4.4 per cent of total loans in the third quarter.

But… “the NPLs borne by credit fonciers increased by Bt21.21 million or 7.52 per cent to Bt303.17 million. ” (TNA)

We can call it… even. ;-)

These movements can be easily explained : “The department attributed the NPL decrease mainly to write-offs by financial institutions of NPLs older than one year and the practice of complete loan-loss provisioning.

In addition some commercial banks had sold NPLs at a discount to asset management companie.

Indeed : write-offs lead to… a decrease of NPLs. And to a direct loss. And to sell -at a discount- bad debts to other financial institutions, leads also to a loss.
