Indeed. It's a zero sum game. If you spend more on "tourism", you'll spend less elsewhere.

During a recession, it's foolish to pretend (like Abhisit does indirectly with his stupid ideas) that incomes are rising ! That's the whole point of a recession : wealth does not increase.... but decreases !

Other lie and fantasy : governments do not create jobs per se, do not create wealth... it can merely redistribute it (with losses in the process of course, because gvts are inefficient, always).

People will not spend unless they feel secure in their jobs. Creditors will not lend unless their clients are deemed to be able to repay. At a time like this, longer holidays will result in less spending, not more because insecure people will remain at home like hermits. The money they would've spent for lunch and transport and after-work shopping/beer (to relieve the tedium of work), etc will remain in their pockets.

With unemployment increasing by 800,000 it does make you gaze in wonder at such headlines wondering where all the Thais are that are going to fill those empty rooms. And any that did book in would be paying a pittance compared to what the international market pays. Have also heard that Thai patrons don't use the mini-bar, restaurants, telephones or tour desk, where many hotels get a nice mark up.

Last year went to Khon Kaen and the hotel wanted to charge 2,000+ per room where I wanted 2 rooms for 3 days, they did say though that if we were govt workers they could discount to 700 per night. No I didn't stay there.

I think we're going to need to redefine the word 'incompetent'.

We may need to have a look at 'clueless fuckhead' as well.
