Chart, petroleum : net imports, value and volume per month

Oil prices are down… and thanks to the tax cuts decided by the government (for 6 months)… the atmosphere is becoming euphoric.

But, let’s have a look on hard datas.

Here is a chart of net imports of petroleum :

-net imports = imports minus exports (Thailand produces and exports crude oil and other petroleum products)

-petroleum = “crude oil + pretroleum products + others” (but “crude oil” = 97 % of the total volume)

(Source EPPO)

In june, net imports reached 559 904 barrels per day, against 588 978 barrels per day in june 2007.

But the value, of course, exploded to 68,9 billions THB, against 42,1 billions on year before.

That’s a 63 % increase.

I drive a fair bit in Bangkok and Thailand in general and it is obvious that traffic is down even though you can still get stuck for 5-10 min in a bad intersection.
The lover crude import is probably more a result of higher LPG and CNG usage. More and more big trucks use supplement CNG when running on diesel.
I also have a feeling that the oil companies are drawing down their commercial crude inventories, but I can’t find any hard number for inventory data.

Right Bob. Even though there is a correlation between crude oil imports/price with cars traffic, there are many other factors.

This is why I made other charts, focused on gasoline/diesel/lpg situation.

I will update soon this last chart.

Very good charts. Do you also have a chat for number of cars, trucks, motor cycles, etc registred in Thailand?

    You’ll find plenty of them.

    In google, type :
    chart car

Or browse my All charts category

I use monthly datas provided by the BOT. And from time to time, quarterly datas.
