South : banality of the horror… a garbage truck driver killed

The situation in the South makes less noise, eclipsed by more burning issues (political crisis etc.).

And the level of violence has been reduced (less bomb attacks for instance and less casualties).

But still, we can read some horrible and absurd news…

Yala – A garbage truck drive was fatally shot by insurgents Wednesday morning.

Samphan Teerasukhon, 40, was shot while driving his garbage truck on the road behind the Raman district office at 5:37 am. He died on the way to the district hospital, police said. (Nation)

If the “insurgents” are the real culprits for this killing… what could be the justification of such act ?

What’s the point to kill a garbage truck driver ? Is there any link or symbol between a garbage truck driver and the thai authorities ?

Willingness to create an atmosphere of terror (anybody can be a target) ? Or just random shooting ? Random shooting by drunken maniacs ?

“What’s the point to kill a garbage truck driver ?”

Easy one. If it was not a “Random shooting by drunken maniacs ?” the answer will be: “Willingness to create an atmosphere of terror (anybody can be a target)”. Regardless of who were the actual killers.

Okay, but in this case why not children ? Or pregnant women ?

Before, the shootings were somehow (if I may say) targeted : teachers, civil servants, soldiers, monks etc.

They were seen as symbols of the thai state.

And the means of terror were “classic” with bombings (markets, restaurants) and beheadings.

    But… a garbage truck driver ?

It would be totally absurd if it wasn’t tragic.

Can you be sure that the next step won’t be children or pregnant women? It also depends who is the terrorists’ audience: killing policemen may be “communicated” more easily than killing children. A garbage truck driver at least has some kind of official function and is more easily targeted than e.g. soldiers.

But this is all speculation anyway. Fact is, somebody was killed. This means a tragic loss to a family and it will frighten a lot of people.

I agree with TC that killing a garbage truck driver was a stupid political statement to make, even for Southern terrorists madmen. Something not right about this story. If every killing at the South can be blamed on insurgents, the Police Department will have a convenient scapegoat for their incompetence and laziness.
