Chart, trade balance : per month and quarter until Q3

We are talking a lot about trade… Everybody is looking for the first signs of “weakness” and the fallouts from the global financial crisis.

Here is a view about trade balance (exports – imports).

First, by month.

It was a little bit better in september (surplus of 142 millions USD, after a deficit of 675 millions in august).

But let’s widen our perspectives with the chart per quarter, from Q1 1997…

We can see that we are going down since Q1 2008, after a good 2007 year. And on a long term basis, we are on a low trend.

Let’s remember that exports/imports count goods only… On a next chart, we will have a look at the services… People start to worry about… tourism.

Do you have an explanation to why the trade balance was so negative in Q2-Q3 2005?

I was surprised too when I saw the datas.
By looking quickly at the details of imports over this period, I would say : capital goods (more transportation goods) and… oil.
