Airport : reinforcements for the PAD… and for the police ?

By 6:00 pm (1100 GMT) the PAD rally at Suvarnabhumi had swollen to 10,000, the largest number since the movement first invaded the facility on Tuesday, eyewitnesses said. (DPA)

Voila ! At last. This is a good report as far as journalism is concerned : Who, what, when, where, why and how. Basic although essential information.

On the police side, a recent AP report says :

About 2,000 policemen were deployed around Suvarnabhumi international airport[…]

The 2,000 policeman at Suvarnabhumi were deployed at all exit and entry points around the airport, said police Maj. Gen. Rachandra Ruenkamon, the deputy chief of operations in the area.

One checkpoint on the main highway leading to the airport on Bangkok’s outskirts was manned by about 400 policemen accompanied by about 20 navy sailors armed with M-16 rifles.( AP)

Is it real ? Or just wishful thinking from deputy chief of operations ? Reuters has another report, totally different.

Thailand’s government may have imposed emergency law over Bangkok’s besieged Suvarnabhumi airport, but it was not stopping a steady stream of people driving up on Saturday to support the anti-government push.

Police armed with automatic rifles blocked one road to the $4 billion complex, one of the world’s largest airports, but were totally absent from other routes, including the main five-lane expressway leading directly to the blockaded terminal.[…]

One of the most basic information for a journalist is TIME. WHEN. I don’t understand how AP can wire such a report without giving such critical information. In such situation, one hour can make the difference. We need freaking timestamps.

This bloody airport is at less than 40 km from the heart of Bangkok. And it’s still very difficult to get proper reports. It’s amazing.

The bottom line is : the police didn’t prevent TODAY more PAD’s supporters to join the airport.

And this is a fundamental mistake.

So I repeat the key words : humiliated, scared to death, incompetent and clowns (feel free to post your own key words).

    according to Websters
    1 : a ludicrous figure : clown
2 : a gross and usually ill-educated or stupid person

yes, that one will work just fine

    @ Thaicrisis

“And this is a fundamental mistake.” You are right that it’s a mistake, but it’s not a fundamental one. The fundamental mistake alreday happened, it was to let the revolutionaries seize the airport in the first place. But the government has long been neutered. Police and military are not government branches of their own but merely tools of the executive branch. Both of them don’t follow any orders anymore, the military because most of them support the revolutionaries, the police because most of them are afraid of the lynch law after the imminent change of power. So the open questions are: will the Thai people be able to repel the reactionary revolution and if not, how long will the new regime be able to subdue Thailand?

  3. 3 fall 29 November 2008 at 1:36 pm

the military because most of them support the revolutionaries
No, because their C-in-C support the royalist reactionary. And no, the C-in-C(in their perspective) is not Somchai. But someone retired and recently beamed a satisfactory smile for camera.

So the open questions are: will the Thai people be able to repel the reactionary revolution and if not, how long will the new regime be able to subdue Thailand?
No, the PAD lost the battle, but the royalist reactionary won the war.
However, I am guessing within 10 years(when age take it toll), there will be another war for Democracy(unless Thailand already became like Burma and North Korea)

    @ fall

We have no disagreement. When I say “military” I don’t mean any single private, but the top brass. The views of indivudual soldiers don’t matter at all as long as they won’t start to disobey orders by themselves. But for the time being I doubt that the military will experience a rebellion from within their ranks. Also the views of individual PAD supporters don’t matter as long as they remain to function as useful idiots and disposable pawns for the royalist reactionary.

I don’t understand… if the PPP is going to be dissolved on 2nd Dec, why bother with the airport seige??! It makes no sense to hold the nation hostage like this!!

If it is to circumvent constitutional means i.e. provoke violence,
PAD is mightly irresponsible to predicate a winning strategy on people losing lives.

Such a brinkmanship tears the country apart for political objective.
the only smart thing about the BK elites is they were smart enough to setup PAD as a front for them so as to disassociate from the consequence of such actions.

i don’t think a competition of numbers of supporters is the right way to govern a country. Just because PAD have 10,000 people on the street, that DOES NOT means the votes of millions don’t count. To me, the party that wins does not matter. In politics, there will always be winners and losers. Thailand has moved to voting to make the “winning and losing” process civil. By adopting a mob behavior, demanding “i win or i will destroy the country” is a degeneration to the original state of anarchy. US democrats only win by 52% of the vote, we don’t see the 48% up in arms and holding the country hostage.

Either they negotiate a civil ending to this
or this will end up in literal competition of numbers, with UDD mobilizing
or the country literally splitting according to electoral votes.
By staying in Chiangmai (not a brave move, but smart in strategic sense), Somchai is setting the stage of splitting the country.

Personally, i think the government should not give in to the PAD.
It can fall by any other means but not because PAD rallies and demands for it to step down. If not, this will set the terrible precedence that anyone with 10,000 people rule the country.

As an aside, i wonder how things will look like on the 5th if this drags on. Are they going to stop, smile and pretend nothing happened?
Not a very good time for celebrations, I’m afraid.

PAD have their own “logic”, which excludes anything to do with common sense ! 😉 most of them are BRAINWASHED by the professional propaganda of expert demagogues as Sondhi and Suryasai. they watch mostly if not ONLY their own ASTV propaganda channels, and are practically isolated from the rest of their fellow countrymen, they do not allow ANY news and information which is different from “official doctrine” of their lobotomy-surgeons. 🙂

so, do not expect much from them. they are zombies.

  7. 7 chinesethai 29 November 2008 at 4:48 pm

Instead of bitching about PAD occupying the airport, since you elected this government to rule, why don’t you call for Somchai to take the responsibility or just quit and let somebody else capable to remove PAD to replace him? Whether the replacement is from within PPP, or from Chart Thai Party or Ruamjaithai Party. Stop bitching!

If the Yellow Shirt PAD are stupid and crazy, you and your Red Shirt gangs are no different.

  8. 8 paperback 29 November 2008 at 5:05 pm

    @ chinesethai

Hypocritical babble. If the government would have the means to remove PAD from the airport you would be the first to whine how this murderous puppet regime can dare to go against all those poor, innocent, peaceful, country-saving, King-loving, righteous, holy etc. yellowshirts.

  9. 9 chinesethai 29 November 2008 at 5:10 pm

    @ paperback,

Tell me what I said wrong in the principle. If PAD and UDD are crazy, you are no different from them either. Just pointing fingers all over doesn’t make you look better than anybody.

  10. 10 paperback 29 November 2008 at 5:28 pm

There is something very wrong in your statement: there is no replacement from within PPP, or from Chart Thai Party or Ruamjaithai Party who is capable of removing PAD from the airport. The only institutions able to do so are either the police or the military and as I said before none of these two are willing to follow the government’s orders. Your alternative is not some other PM, your alternative is a new system of government according to PAD’s whishes, i.e. something resembling an absolute monarchy whith serfs instead of citizens.

“If PAD and UDD are crazy, you are no different from them either.”

You forgot to put any logic into this sentence. But just speak openly: do you approve PAD’s seizure of the airpoert? Yes or no?

  11. 11 Fish 29 November 2008 at 5:33 pm

    chinesethai ;
you do have a strange way of writing i have to say, Hoktula did not mention the airport or bitched about the airport, he is saying PAD are brain washed idiots, anybody with a a few brain cells can see that..
paperback is also right you would be moaning and banging on about god if they did what most of the world watching would like to see done..

Your obviously are a PAD sympathiser so why don’t you get your self down to the airport and help them let the air out of Ambulances tyres etc…

The PAD followers will be bitching and moaning blaming everybody else once people start losing jobs left ,right and centre because tourists will not come, loss of trade etc etc..

Are they going to do this everytime they disagree with what ever the government party that has the job of running the place in the future ??

  12. 12 Hoktula 29 November 2008 at 7:17 pm

since you “moderate” Comments anyway – you may cut out this firts part, which is mostly for YOU only:

I can’t see that you “moderate” blunt obvious flaming (if not a personal attack) as this one :
Instead of bitching about PAD occupying the airport…
    Stop bitching ! ”

    why don’t you be consistent ? 😉
otherwise I wonder WHY you allow this fella to call me practically call me bitch – but CENSOR comments in which I expose this moronic demagogue.

by allowing him to personally attack me your “moderation” proves to be a highly PARTISAN / biased.

the following part (my response to CT) – it is entirely up to you. since as you’ve already admitted it yourself, you DO support PAD – I won’t be surprised if you censor it too.
but even if CT will not read it – at least you will.
and it is already worth it. since it may play a role of tiny drop of reality on the lake of illusion caused by PAD demagogic propaganda.

your tactic is typical of PAD:
“boo or make shut up anyone who doesn’t agree with you” 🙂
PAD attacks on reporters are world-known nowadays !
(even wordpress reporters has made official statement on this matter.)

    although you assume too much.

FYI – I NEVER vote for ANYONE !
believe it or not – I’ve never voted in my entire life.
so, b4 you pass your judgments – take into consideration such possibility. 🙂 I hope you can surmise what I am trying to say or should I spell it for you ? alright, just in case:
I did NOT elect Somchai or his government. alright?
and neither will elect anyone else. I do NOT believe in “elections” – practically anywhere in the world. it is a FARCE, a show, nothing else.

    this is a bit off-topic.

however I do not think that at the moment there are some who might be more capable than Somchai. many can talk big talks while “sitting on the fence”. somehow though none of them step forward and even bother to run for election. and those few who does (as, say Abhisit) can’t even create a good enough political platform which would enable them to win.

regarding present situation of ILLEGAL occupation of Airports – educate yourself a bit. try to read / watch something than your ASTV (ala Thai “Fox News”) ! for example – recent fresh article by Asian Human Rights Commission which calls PAD FASCISTS (what I was saying all along). even Bkk Post article recently called them TERRORISTS (another thing I said many times).

your “logic” of government resignation – totally absurd. because NOTHING can justify PAD fascist-terrorist thugs taking over HIGH SECURITY areas as international airports, and grossly DISRESPECTED, disregarded and JEOPARDIZED the safety of so many FOREIGN people, sabotaged .

    but then….

reasoning with you is as worthwhile as with any PAD zombies or their supporters – as those “doctors” who has given up their sacred Hippocratic vow and think it is perfectly Ok.

you are pathetic and hopeless. you are the past – time tide will sweep away your likes sooner or later.
it is inevitable. that is why all your elite buddies are so desperate that they even go into such extremes as to do such a direct unmasked DAMAGE to this country, and even disrupt and sabotage the proper functioning of INTERNATIONAL agencies and businesses ! (airlines, all the businessmen in transit, all the cargo…)

you PAD people (or more precisely those who use PADsters as their cannon fodder) are “cutting the branch you’re sitting on” ! how else can be such people described than morons ?

PAD and those who back it will eventually loose.
they are pathology in the development process of this country which sooner or later will be overcame by the forces of nature.

    Cheers ! 🙂

P.S. BTW PAD and UDD can not be compared !
UDD has NEVER done many of those things PAD does/ have done (list is too long). they show a lot of restrain and discipline of not attacking PAD. therefore, I do not buy this BS argument.

although, I would point out that I am not necessarily support PAD. I’d rather side with those “black-white” or “green” – or whatever color they take – those who try to stay in the middle. unfortunately, at this moment ONLY UDD / “Reds” undertake any serious effort to oppose PAD. others are either too naive and underestimate PAD (as all those parties in 30-s who dismissed the seriousness of danger which Nazis posed) or care too little, if at all.

although in recent day there are many voices which condemn PAD, as those “black-white” or “green”. I doubt though that they’ll be organized and achieve substantial power / influence !

UDD though are straightforward and direct.
that is already a good credit to them.

  13. 13 ThaiCrisis 29 November 2008 at 8:03 pm

Hoktula… I’m really tired of you.

I told you before : if you don’t feel at ease here, just leave.

If you don’t appreciate my work, why do you come back ?

And I will repeat one last time : I’m not a PAD supporter. If you are able to read, it should be obvious. Read my articles about the Junta… and you’ll understand.

God, I don’t even know why I try to argue with you.

So here we are, your comment is published. I hope you’ll be happy. It’s a gift. I’m in a good mood tonight.

But unfortunatly… it will be the last one.

  14. 14 Bedwyr 30 November 2008 at 12:59 am

Oh I don’t know TC, Hoktula has a right to an opinion – no? maybe not an opinion many would agree with but hey, variety is the spice of life…
