Exports yes… but what exactly ?
There is a lot of non sense on Internet about the thai exports…
Some believe that agriculture is the main earner. Others than car manufacturing is the alpha and omega…
Time to put the record straight. After “Exports to who“, here is a new chart : “Export what”. 😉
Bank of Thailand (table EC_XT_008) gives plenty of details about products Thailand exports (amounts and even quantities for some items).
But it’s difficult to read. So I’ve regrouped items by large categories, and with a view per quarter (amounts in millions THB).
The group “Electrical appliances” has clearly reached a ceiling. However, the car industry has shown a striking and constant growth (times 3 from 2001 to 2008). But we have to keep in mind that the car industry represents a mere… 11 % of the total thai exports (figures for Q3 2008, look at next chart).
Very strong growth too for “Agricultural products” (but since Q3 2007 only, thanks to the explosion of prices). Exactly same phenomenon for the group “Mineral + forestry + petroleum…”.
However, “Textile” is going down. Slowly but surely.
Now, the last part : what is the percentage of the grand total for each group (figures for Q3 of 2008) ?
Overall, there is a good balance between different groups (ressources / manufactured goods / agriculture etc.).
