Disaster : auto sales plunge by 30% in january

Auto sales in January plunged 29.81 per cent, compared to the same period last year, as consumers delayed purchases on worries of economic impacts, according to data compiled by Tri Petch Isuzu Sales.

Only 32,085 units were sold in the month.

Of total units sold, 15,350 were pickup trucks, which showed a 39.56 per cent plunge on year. Passenger cars also posted a 9.96 per cent drop with the sale figures of 13,527 units.

All auto companies experienced a sharp fall in sales. Suffering the most is Mitsubishi of which sales dropped 49.27 per cent on year, followed by Nissan’s 43.74 per cent and Isuzu’s 31.46 per cent. At Toyota and Honda, sales also dropped 23.70 per cent and 25.01 per cent on year. (Nation)

It’s a drop of 45 %, compared to december (total of 59 006 units sold).

It’s a disaster.

Are you surprised ? You could be surprised only if you were living in Lalaland. Or in another solar system.

I mean we got the figures for the US and european car markets in january, plus the exports figures, plus the tax collections figures… All the data, for all the countries, are going in the same direction : the cliff. The hole. The Rabbit Hole.

Why the situation would be different in Thailand ? It’s a global crisis. A global recession. And probably a global depression.

After such data, Abhisit looks more and more like a parrot-clown when he keeps repeating that :

The Thai economy is expected to pick up in the second half of the year once the government’s supplementary budget spending is in place, according to Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva. (Bangkok Post)

Now the laugh is over. Abhisit should be very careful. It’s one thing to look like a clown. It’s another thing to appear totally dumb.

And clearly, he’s walking on this dangerous path… So Abhisit, cut the crap, be a man, an intelligent man, and start to come down on earth, and start to react with common sense. Enough of your stupid pink vaporware.

We will have the details of the car market for january by the end of february (data published by the Bank Of Thailand). I will update the chart.

(facing so many crisis, I need a break… πŸ˜‰ I’m going somewhere in the Alpes. I need pure and cold air. And a high dose of snow and ski. Stay tuned. I will be back on february 23.)

Anyone know where the Hondas, Fords and Toyotas are being stockpiled? New cars don’t seem to be being discounted in Bangkok like in places like the US and Australia. They must be piling up somewhere!

Will miss reading your blog during your vacation. This has become the indispensable blog for understanding Thailand. Thanks much!

NYCGuy, cannot agree more. Looking forward to his return from the Alpes (and I hope he can make it with the heavy snowfall in the last days).
