IP rights and USA : Abhisit “unsurprised” by his own contempt

Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva said Saturday he is not surprised that the United States has maintained Thailand on its Priority Watch List (PWL) following Thailand’s failure to significantly improve its performance regarding intellectual property rights (IPR) violations.

“It’s within our earlier expectations,” said Mr. Abhisit, adding that Washington has concern for violations of its intellectual property, while the assessment of Thailand’s status was made over a relatively short period of time.

Because of the time constraints, he said, the US opted to maintain Thailand’s trade status as it was. Consequently the Thai government must work harder to persuade Washington to upgrade its status.

Thailand will ensure that intellectual property law is applied and that violations are prosecuted. There is no need to issue new laws as there are already several laws governing the issue, Mr. Abhisit. (TNA)

A striking statement. Instead of saying that Thailand will try to correct the situation, Abhisit says that… he’s not surprised ! ?

Great. I mean this is real leadership : “yeah I know we fucked up, and we continue to do so, and we are happy about it, so I’m not surprised that the US are pissed off. Mai pen rai. Sabai. I’m hungry, what do we eat tonight ?”

And then Mister Abhisit ? What ? This guy is seriously short.

Such blatant contempt, such thoughtlessness should piss off a little bit more Washington…

The thai government itself violates IP rights, through compulsory licences for drugs (read here)… So it’s rather a bad example. As for the laws, yes indeed, Thailand has all the necessary laws… The only problem is that it doesn’t give a rat shit about the use, on the ground, of those laws.

So in a way, it’s good to see that Abhisit doesn’t change a winning strategy.

Change with Abhisit ? Yes we can’t.

Well, look on the bright side. AT least he didn’t complain that the stupid foreigners don’t understand Thais.

    Credit where due.

Well, when it comes to Thai laws, it seems that they are mostly construed the same way like lucifer cunstrues the bibel.
